So week for CDC we had some guest speaker come in to talk to us I mean stay home and speak to us via zoommmm. The class started with a talk from the very inspirational designer Dr Norman Stevenson of Design Partners Ireland. Norman began to from the being of his design studies where we could all relate to him in some way as a design student, he went on to tell us about his career and the places he has worked. He showed us some of his first design work at LG, which was interesting to see how I might be bridged my academic projects to projects in the real world. His main points were to get better at the stuff you love and always keep improving at the things you're not so good at. I thought this was a quite exciting way to develop as an overall designer. I can definitely apply this to my design work. Next up was Mr Noel Joyce head of design at HAX a venture capital program for hardware. His talk was a bit more up my street as I have always wanted to start my own company. He started in a group producing a stylus he taught they had a good idea and pursued it against the manufacturing odds. His start-up ended up assembling a portion of their stock by hand, which later ended up in the hands of Nike designers as they use it to work today. Noel had some pretty cool stories, but it became pretty clear that designing and getting a product produced in the likes of China and back to your market isn't an easy task. Noel also talked about how business is possible overlooking in course like ours. If you cant, sell it, or it's not very feasible what the point of designing it is? I gained lots of key insights into what starting a company would really look from noels talk. His story is really inspirational and moving and just show where you can end up with hard work and grit. Norman left us with a design task for us to include in this week's blog the task was "what we felt are our responsibilities as a designer and if we could have invented one design that's already out there what would it be?" So in previous blogs, I talked about design for the future and what I can do to be apart of it with my responsibilities. In my blog 'The Green Future' i said "As a designer for the future, I am always conscious of if my designs are future proof and green" (MB2020) which I think are my responsibilities. To only design life cycle driven products that are integrated into a circular design system. We need to start becoming more sustainable people, and that starts with us the designers setting trends and coaxing people along to follow us as we design greener and cleaner products for our future. A sustainable world is the way forward and in my opinion, designing for a sustainable world is my responsibility. If I could have invented one design ideally it would be the iPhone, so I would have a lot of money, but for this exercise, I'm not going to think about money. It's hard to choose, so I've picked 2. The football: There is nothing in the world quite like the football there are not much things in life that bring millions of people together from all over, but football is one of them. the 'beautiful game' as its called is so simple that all you need is a soft round sphere. It's possibly the most simple little thing that draws millions to watch and play this game all over the world. In a more modern term, I wish I invented touch screen glass. Touch screen glass is everywhere today from the fridge to the car, and even to the shower. it was a vital invention of the 21st century and has opened so many more doors to 1000's of other products.
